TWI is proud to announce the launch of Sharc Matter® by our commercialisation partners OPUS Materials Technologies. TWI has developed these silica-based additives for advanced functional coatings and resin reinforcement technologies using the Stöber process. OPUS are now bringing these additives to the commercial marketplace via an exciting and novel e-commerce platform.
The materials have been developed as part of a series of publicly-funded projects. Currently there are six types of silica particles offered to the market, ranging from 35 nanometres to 310 nanometres in diameter.
The particles are dispersed in alcohol and are discrete rather than being agglomerated, whilst the solvent enables them to be functionalised to offer bespoke characteristics including repellence, abrasion resistance, fire retardancy, and barrier properties.
With the materials being built by design rather than offered with set functionality, there are a wide range of potential applications for industries including additive manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, paint manufacturing, oil and gas.
