Bidding a fond farewell to TWI tour-guide, Roger Wheatley

Thu, 17 January, 2019

Having helped inspire generations of engineers, TWI tour guide Roger Wheatley is set to retire this month.

Roger began working as an electrician at TWI 43 years ago, where he helped build rigs to aid in the development of several different processes. However, not one to rest on his laurels, Roger took the opportunity to progress his career and gain some new skills by studying metallurgy before joining the lasers section of TWI.

Retiring from his work with lasers in 1999, Roger continued his good work with the company by becoming a valued tour guide for The Welding Institute, alongside colleagues Bryan Martin and David Staines.

As tour guides, Roger, Bryan and David have shown thousands of people around the laboratories at TWI, including everyone from college and university students to members of the military and retirees.

Following 18 years working as a tour guide at TWI’s headquarters near Cambridge, 75-year-old Roger is now set to retire from this role and TWI and The Welding Institute would like to thank him for his years of dedicated service.

A keen golfer, we hope that Roger enjoys his well-earned retirement, although we hope to see him back as a visitor himself in the future.
