TWI has joined a new project, led by Precision Varionic International Ltd (PVI), to develop a new non-destructive inspection method for pipeline corrosion.
The Gridsense project, which is supported by InnovateUK, aims to create an innovative inspection technique for Corrosion Under Insulation with greater efficiency and capabilities than current screening methods.
Non-invasive screening helps to minimise inspection costs while regular checks help prevent the risk of leakage and spillage, which could have detrimental consequences for the environment.
In addition, being able to monitor in remote locations in real time, without the need for physical attendance, means 24/7 inspection is possible to match the needs of industry in extending the lifetime of pipeline assets.
The Gridsense project plans to develop, test and disseminate a functional system prototype that can be deployed by the end of 2018.
To achieve this, further research needs to be conducted and companies in the energy sector can help by providing feedback on Corrosion Under Insulation issues, so that TWI and PVI can improve specifications to match industry requirements.
