TWI is launching a new plastic welding training course providing an excellent foundation in hot gas and extrusion welding techniques.
‘Hot Gas and Extrusion Welding Appreciation’ is a two-day course being delivered in partnership with Welwyn Tool Group, at their customer centre in Welwyn Garden City. Taught using state-of-the-art Leister plastic welding equipment, by TWI’s impartial and experienced plastic welder trainers, the course is suitable for anyone with little or no experience of this type of welding who is likely to be involved in the fabrication or repair of plastic structures.
TWI has provided training in hot gas and extrusion welding to a number of companies in the past, but this is the first time the course is being made available to individuals. If you are a welder wishing to expand your expertise to plastics, an engineering apprentice, or you work with plastics in another capacity and would like to broaden your professional repertoire, this introductory course will prove essential.
Combining practical training with classroom-based learning, the course will cover areas including an introduction to common thermoplastics, joint preparation, defects and how to avoid them, process control, weld symbols, and inspection and testing. There will be a significant hands-on element, working with polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) sheet plastic.
By the end of the course you can expect to have a good understanding of hot gas and extrusion welding, to be able to identify common materials and choose an appropriate procedure, to understand weld properties, and to be able to identify faults and defects and know how to avoid them.
The course will be run for the first time on 22–23 March 2016. Other dates this year include 21–22 June and 11–12 October. It will cost £595 plus VAT, which includes the cost of all materials, lunches and refreshments.
Welwyn Tool Group’s Clive Day said: ‘The expertise of TWI and Welwyn Tool Group are coming together to offer this “best in practice” foundation course for those new to plastic welding, and we are pleased to be able to accommodate this in our purpose-built Leister customer centre in Welwyn Garden City.’
TWI continues to offer plastic welding courses to companies, which can be customised to contain exactly the modules required and lead to CSWIP certification via examination. See the ‘case studies’ section of the course page for some examples of how we have worked with companies in the past.
