A committee led by a TWI engineer has published a new British Standard providing guidance on the use of single-edge-notch tension (SENT) tests.
The standard, BS 8571:2014, represents the first time that SENT testing has been standardised, and will be of significant interest to TWI Industrial Members in the oil and gas industry, where SENT tests are increasingly carried out to qualify pipeline girth weld procedures.
The British Standards Institution (BSI) committee responsible for producing the standard was led by Dr Philippa Moore, a TWI engineer specialising in fracture toughness testing. The committee spent several years writing and developing the standard, which applies to steels and covers both single point and R-curve fracture toughness, in terms of both crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and J-integral.
Areas of guidance covered by the standard include specimen design and preparation, testing procedures, instrumentation and analysis of data.
TWI has conducted significant research into improving the effectiveness of SENT testing, including a two-year joint industry project that sought to achieve industry standardisation of the method. The research carried out as part of this project was instrumental in creating the new standard.
