The 10th International Symposium on Friction Stir Welding took place at the China National Convention Center in the heart of the Olympic Green, Beijing, from 20-22 May 2014. This was the first time the symposium had been held in China and the event attracted over 190 delegates from around the world.
The technical programme contained over 90 papers, presented by specialists on all aspects of friction stir welding technology. The higher proportion of research papers, compared to previous years, reflected China's comparative recent and fast adoption of the process. Friction stir welding in steel (in various forms) featured in almost a third of presentations with another popular topic for industry and academia being the joining of dissimilar materials, driven by the need for light-weighting in the automotive industry.
The three-day event was complemented by a well-attended exhibition of friction-stir welded products and services. Delegates also enjoyed a social evening held in a traditional setting plus an industry visit to the Chinese Friction Stir Welding Centre to learn about the country's rapid take-up and to see a range of equipment, tooling and welded samples.
The symposium was run on behalf of the Friction Stir Welding Licensees Association by TWI, and sponsored by the Chinese Friction Stir Welding Centre. The Friction Stir Welding Licensees Association would also like to thank TWI (China) for its assistance in organising the event.
