World Corrosion Awareness Day has been celebrated globally for many years in order to raise public awareness of corrosion and corrosion control. This year Sui-Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL) celebrated the day at its offices in Lahore, Pakistan on the 24th April 2014 with Mr Agha Umer as its guest of honour.
Mr Agha Umer, Senior Engineer in the Engineering Services Department at TWI Pakistan, attended the celebrations and as an expert in the field of corrosion, delivered a talk on the Pipeline Integrity Management Program B31.8s. Agha explained direct assessment methodology, covering in detail external corrosion direct assessment, internal corrosion direct assessment and stress corrosion cracking.
Direct assessment is a four-step method to determine the condition of a pipeline. The methodology assesses the threat from external and internal corrosion and stress corrosion cracking for both liquid and gas carrying lines. The approach consists of:
- Phase 1 - Pre-assessment (risk based study - using TWI RISKWISE for pipelines)
- Phase 2 - Indirect inspection (above ground inspection and flow modelling)
- Phase 3 - Detailed examination (excavation and inspection)
- Phase 4 - Post-assessment (fitness-for-service assessment)
As well as raising awareness of corrosion, the day also aims to identify world best practices in corrosion management, facilitate the provision of corrosion control expertise to governments, industries, and communities, and normalise corrosion-related standards worldwide.
TWI Pakistan is also based in Lahore and offers competency training courses for industry as well as its engineering services. Courses currently scheduled include:
CSWIP 3.0 - Visual Welding Inspector - Level 1
CSWIP 3.1 - Welding Inspector - Level 2
