For more than two decades, TWI has been proud to deliver high quality training and examination services in India, serving a wide range of industrial sectors. In particular there has been high demand for fully certified Non Destructive Test (NDT) operators, most notably in the Energy Sector. Oil and gas continues to offer a buoyant market for such skills, and there is increasing activity, in the field of renewable energy. As India continues to grow industrially, and as health and safety requirements become more robust, TWI has repositioned itself, to directly fulfil the growing need for properly trained and competent workers.
In September 2011, Mr Jim Kerins was appointed, to set up a TWI facility in Chennai, focussing initially on NDT and inspection techniques, but also to establish an Indian base for training and technical support in all TWI competences. This office has been operational since January 2012, and has rapidly become fully functional through the employment of local skilled people and resources.
Our investment in Chennai represents a firm commitment to the growing number of TWI Industrial Members in India. Our customer base here has increased by over 20% in the past three years and includes both fully Indian National as well as multi-national organisations.
Within the Chennai facility, we have also launched the NDT Research and Engineering Services Department (NDTRES International). This provides a dedicated interface with TWI engineering resources, and more than 700 staff, globally. It will add significant value to existing TWI - Indian networks and our ability to deliver wider knowledge and technology transfer. Current NDT activities through this office broadly cover the following topics:
- Inspection of austenitic steel components and dissimilar metal welds, for detection of manufacturing and in-service flaws
- Monitoring and detection of corrosion using medium range ultrasonic guided wave
- Ultrasonic detection and characterisation of stress corrosion cracking in welds
- The use of non-linear ultrasonic techniques for the detection of kissing bonds in composites
- Detection of corrosion in storage tank floors
- Long term structural monitoring of cracks and failures
- Continuous monitoring of machinery and rotating parts
Companies in India are increasingly investing in engineering quality and productivity by embracing new processes and technologies. TWI welcomes the opportunity to be of service through its unique, multidisciplinary range of technology engineering, training and information services.
It is with great pleasure and excitement that we begin a new adventure in India!
