Global changes in legislation are driving an expansion in demand for plastics welder training and certification in Nigeria.� The� changes in legislation mean that� certification is now required to guarantee the skill and knowledge of welders when installing plastic fabrications. TWI's plastics welder training and certification programme includes Hot Gas and Extrusion Welder, Lining Membrane Welder, and Butt Fusion, Electrofusion and Socket Fusion Welder training.� Demand continues to grow on a global scale, and TWI have been able to respond quickly to changes in the market and develop their offering effectively, especially in new markets such as the Middle East, Malaysia and the African states of Uganda and Nigeria.
The first success outside Europe for the plastics welder programme was the training and qualification at CSWIP Entry Level in Geomembrane Extrusion Welding. Baywood Dextron Ventures enlisted TWI to deliver the training and certification� to six of its staff at the Chevron site at Escravos in order to equip them with the skills necessary to work on a large oil storage tank rehabilitation contract, which required the interior bases of the tanks and the surrounding bunds to be lined.
The six trainees had little or no experience in the welding process before the TWI instructor, Andy Knight, expertly led the group through a series of practical and theory sessions at CSWIP Entry Level for Geomembrane Extrusion Welding.
The on-site welding course ended with a 20-question multiple-choice paper and a practical examination. Welded test pieces produced by the trainees during the examination were brought back to the UK for independent testing at a third-party test house to ensure the quality and integrity of the certification.
The Baywood Dextron Ventures trainee plastics welders' great penchant for learning and working through the various elements in a diligent manner enabled them to� pass both the theory and the practical examinations to gain a four year professional qualification.
During the course, the team also identified that there was a skills shortage in hot wedge welding for the bund lining material, and as such further instruction would be beneficial in that area.
