Welding Processes Technical Group Meeting: Welding and Repair of High Temperature Plant
A major objective of the process plant and power generation industries is the need to reduce life costs. One of the methods of achieving this is life extension by means of both repair and replacement and the use of materials with enhanced performance. This online technical group meeting will consider some of the methods by which this objective may be achieved.
During this event the focus will be on the welding and repair of high temperature steels. Topics include the cladding of pressure vessels; welding and weld repair of creep resistant steels, including the P/T91and MarBn steels; welding repair strategies for high temperature plant; orbital welding for repair and replacement and the welder apprenticeship “Trailblazer” standards for the next generation of welders. The presentations will be made by a range of experts from both industry and TWI and there will be time for discussion of the various topics presented.

Professor Scott Lockyer
Technical Head, Materials & Corrosion
Uniper Technologies Limited
Professor Scott Lockyer is Technical Head of Materials and Corrosion in Uniper Technologies Limited’s (UTG) Integrity and Inspection Solutions Department. Scott’s role is to provide technical leadership and oversight of Materials activities such as R&D, failure investigation and component life assessment. UTG is part of Uniper SE, a International energy company with 41GW of generation capacity which is active in more than 40 countries with in excess of 13,000 employees. UTG provides engineering and technical support services to both Uniper and external customer assets across the full range of energy generation technologies through their complete life cycle. Scott joined UTG in November 2005 following technical management and principal engineer roles in a number of engineering consultancies including TWI Ltd. Prior to this Scott was a Research Fellow in the Department of Materials at Oxford University. Scott is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Welding Institute. Scott holds a degree in Metallurgy & Materials Science and a PhD in Metallurgy from the University of Liverpool. Scott was appointed Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in Advanced Materials at Loughborough University from 2013-2017 and has subsequently continued in this post.
Head of Welding Engineering
Over 35 years experience in welding and welding engineering with over 20 years spent on power generation plant. Currently Head of Welding Engineering, Responsible Welding Coordinator (in accordance with ISO 3834-2) and global construction Welding Technical Authority at Doosan Babcock, providing governance to both UK and overseas based operational sites in power generation, petrochemical, nuclear and process sectors.Increasingly engaged in developing novel solutions to repair of ageing plant, especially nuclear and process/gas plant. Also providing support in the construction of the new nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point.
Has been with Babcock for 13 years and currently trying to stave off effects of a 30 year rugby career.
Principal Project Leader – Arcs Welding
Marcello joined TWI in 2006, working in the Fracture Integrity and Arc Welding sections, after a four-year experience as a metallurgist/welding engineer with a pressure vessel manufacturer. Marcello holds a MEng in Materials Engineering from Politecnico in Milan. He specialises in welding engineering consultancy, support with the application of welding codes and standards and welding of high-temperature materials. He has published over ten peer-reviewed publications and conference papers and actively participates in many national and international codes and standards committees, including those covering the ISO 15614 and ISO 9606 series, ASME BPVC Section and Afcen committees.
Mark Golding Consultants Ltd
40+ year experienced professional with a demonstrated history of working in the mechanical and industrial engineering industry. Previous experience in Gas, Petroleum, Power Plants, Piplines, Repair and Reclamation industries. Strong support professional with a metallurgical/engineering bias. Development of welding processes such as GMAW, GTAW, SAW and ESW in symergy with the welding consumables to develop process efficiency and the metallurgical benefits.
Mark has previous experience within companies such as Oerlikon, Soudometal-Bohler and Lincoln-Metrode. Mark has developed consumables, managed procurement and supply chains, developed sales in export markets in the EMEA - India - Africa and managed a technical support function and development.
Welding Engineering Manager
BAE Systems - Maritime Submarines
Mike is currently employed as the Welding Engineering Manager for BAE Systems - Maritime Submarines, based in Barrow in Furness and leads a team of professional Welding Engineers and Technicians supporting the design, construction and commissioning of nuclear powered submarines for the Royal Navy.
He was elected Chair of a new Trailblazer Employer Group established in 2014 and to date, has led the group, consisting of employers representing both large and small/medium sized companies, training providers, end point assessment organisations and professional institutions, through successful submission and approval of new "employer led" apprenticeship standards for the welding industry in England.
Mike has recently joined The Welding Institute Governing Council.
