Materials Testing 2019

Exhibitions 03-05 September 2019

Materials Testing – the most comprehensive exhibition in the world of testing for quality, non-destructive testing (NDT), materials testing, condition monitoring and diagnostic technology – returns in 2019 with a new range of features and industry speakers.

TWI staff will be presenting the following papers at the accompanying conference NDT 2019.

Meet the team

Ian Cooper

Technology Fellow, Advanced NDT

Ian has 30 years of experience in advanced non-destructive testing. He helps companies apply cutting edge inspection technologies to challenging materials across a range of industrial sectors. As an example, he is currently leading the IntACom programme, a series of major projects funded by TWI, industrial partners and the Welsh Government, developing advanced robotic inspection systems for complex geometry composite components.

Doug Wylie

Team Manager – NDT Products

Following a 23-year career in the RAF, Doug joined TWI in January 2008 as NDT Programme Manager, Training and Examination Services, responsible for the delivery of the non-destructive testing (NDT) training across four venues in the UK. In October 2011, after completion of a BEng (Hons) degree through the Open University, he transferred to the NDT Section.

Doug, an Incorporated Engineer and multi-method NDT Level 2/3, has experience across a variety of industry sectors. He has been involved in NDT application both on- and offshore, third-party inspection witnessing, procedure development and review, collaborative projects and single-client project support. As a team manager he is now responsible for developing the delivery of NDT products in TWI’s Integrity Management Group, and is also leading the innovation project ‘PolyTest’, a new system for inspecting welded joints in HDPE piping.

Away from TWI he is chair of the BINDT Membership, Qualification & Education Committee and sits on BINDT Council.

Neil Harrap

Advanced NDT Lecturer

Neil returned to TWI TES 2 Feb 2015. Neil previously worked at TWI between 2007-2011, during which time his primary role was the development and delivery of Phased Array & ToFD courses/exams. Neil's main background prior to TWI was with the Royal Air Force, as aerospace technician, NDT Technician 1976-2005, then MoD NDT Project Manager(civil servant) 2005-2007. During Neil's time away from TWI, he increased his knowledge of advanced NDT methods whilst employed as an advanced UT/ET specialist for a major equipment OEM, and NDT Market Manager for a major NDT equipment and services vendor. Neil is very pleased to be back at TWI, and looks forward to contributing to a first class team.

Wei Guo

Senior Project Leader

Wei obtained his Ph.D degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Manchester, and began his career at The University of Manchester, working as a postdoctoral Research Associate in Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding of steel/Al sheets (EPSRC LATEST 2). Wei moved to Nuclear AMRC, University of Sheffield in January 2016 to take up a post of Research Associate in Bulk Additive Manufacturing. In this role, he plays a crucial role in the delivery of High Value Manufacturing Catapult projects and European Commission H2020 project (AMOS). He has had  11 papers published in peer reviewed journals and he was also invited as a peer reviewer for many journals and conferences. Wei joined TWI as a Senior Project Leader at NDT Section, Integrity Management Group in June 2018.

Alan Clarke

Principal Project Leader

Since starting as a Project Leader in 2012, Alan has gained experience in automated digital radiography techniques, being involved in a number of collaborative projects in this field. He has a strong background in electronic and microwave engineering and has experience in measurement & instrumentation, systems integration and associated software development. His current work involves computed tomography (CT) inspection and research into advanced X-ray tomographic techniques.

Calum Hoyle

PhD Student

Calum became a PhD student at TWI and University of Wales Trinity Saint David in February 2018. The title of his research is Digital Signal Processing for Surface Wave Full Matrix Capture (FMC). Calum has previously completed a BEng in Mechanical Engineering and an MSc in Energy Systems Engineering.

Lu Zhao

Principal Project Leader - Non-destructive Testing

Lu is a Chartered Engineer and Member of The Welding Institute, with a BA and MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge prior to embarking on her professional career. She joined TWI in November 2009 as a Project Leader. Her main interests are in developing advanced inspection techniques for industrial applications and prototypes for automation and advanced inspection solutions. Lu has worked on a range of development projects including laser ultrasonic testing (UT) inspection techniques, high precision immersion measurements, prototypes for an underwater ship inspection vehicle, a UT simulator and an automated railway track inspection device.

Vishnu Seelan

Project Leader

Vishnu joined TWI in August 2018 after graduating with a PhD in experimental mechanics from the University of Southampton. Working in collaboration with TWI, EDF, NPL and Amec Foster Wheeler for the RESIST project, Vishnu carried out exploratory research investigating the possibility of using infrared thermography for microstructural assessment of welds. Vishnu is also experienced in other experimental mechanics techniques such as Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC). His research interests are focused on infrared thermography and image processing. Currently, Vishnu is gaining exposure to ultrasonic techniques at TWI.

Alicia Gonzalez

Advanced NDT Lecturer

Dr Alicia Gonzalez joined TWI in 2015 after she obtained her PhD from The University of Sheffield. Her research was a collaboration project with TWI where she developed a computational model using artificial intelligence to monitor and predict the behaviour of Friction Stir Welding. Alicia currently works as Senior NDT Lecturer, teaching all the conventional NDT techniques; her specialism is on advanced NDT techniques for ultrasound, which she teaches in both English and Spanish. She is also involved in the development and delivery of new training courses such as the blended learning for phased array and TOFD, research projects for advanced NDT and NDT inspection on site.

Jonathan Riise

Project Leader

Jonathan began his engineering doctorate programme at the University of Strathclyde in October 2014 and is expected to finish in September 2018. During his EngD programme, Jonathan is mainly working at the TWI NDT Validation Centre (Wales). His work focuses on providing metrology solutions for automated robotic inspection of large components with complex geometries. By collaborating with the University of Strathclyde, Jonathan hopes to bring further expertise on robotics from academia into the industrial setting. His research will involve path-planning, control theory and NDT besides his focus on metrology.
