GKN Exclusive Webinar: Heat Exchanger Development, Modelling and Validation

Recently, significant industrial effort has focused on the potential of additively manufactured heat exchangers (AMHX). Laser powder bed fusion enables complex geometries and thin features to be produced which enables significant surface area to volume ratios to be achieved. However, as the geometry becomes more complex, post-processing of AMHX becomes more challenging. This means that a gap develops between the as-designed performance of the AMHX (in terms of thermal efficiency and pressure drop) and the as-manufactured performance due to surface roughness and process-induced distortion. The modelling group at TWI will present on some of these challenges with examples of how simulation tools can close this gap.

Industry Sector Manager - Corporate Development

Chris Wiseman is Corporate Sector Manager at TWI Ltd, for both the Aerospace and Equipment, Consumables & Materials sectors. He also has a specific geographic responsibility for TWI Industrial Members in India and in supporting TWI’s exciting growth there.

As a Materials Scientist, over many years, he has contributed to a number of technologies, including, corrosion prevention, thermo-mechanical forming, novel testing, process optimisation, joining and surface treatments.

Today his role is focused on developing technical and commercial opportunities for TWI and its Industrial Members around the World.

Senior Project Leader - Numerical Modelling and Optimisation

Valerio focuses his work on manufacturing process simulations and structural integrity analysis. In particular, his work has concentrated on fields such as Design-for-AM investigating lattice structures and their stochastic performances, AM simulations and joining process simulations for residual stress and distortions predictions, microstructure simulation for predictions of mechanical properties and hardness.

By background, Valerio is a NAFEMS Professional Simulation Engineer (PSE) in the field of thermo-mechanical behaviour of materials. He also hold a PhD in Computational Mechanics from IMT Lucca (Italy).

Project Leader - Numerical Modelling and Optimisation

Alessio has joined the NMO Group at TWI in October 2018, as a Project Leader. He has obtained his Master's Degree in Aerospace Engineering in 2011 with dissertation in CFD-BEM Validation for Vertical Wind Turbines (VWT). Subsequently, Alessio enrolled to the annual, 9-month, Research Master course in Fluid Dynamics at Von Karman Institute, Belgium, where attended and passed examinations on Experimental Measurements and Computational Methods in Fluid Dynamics. In 2013 Alessio joined the University of Nottingham where he worked on Turbulent Flow Control (TFC) finalised to skin friction reduction, and where he achieved the Master of Phylosophy Degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 2017 Alessio worked in CFD methodology on multiphase flows at Teesside University, where he developed and improved performances of current microbubble aeration systems.
