Structural Integrity Technical Group: Back-to-Basics Webinar: Engineering Critical Assessments
This Back-to-Basics event will be useful for all who want to find out how Engineering Critical Assessments (ECAs) are performed, the input data needed and the pitfalls that can be associated with them.
This event will also be a useful refresher for specialists currently involved with ECAs and may also provide an opportunity to clarify points or concerns with current ECA methods.

Meet the team
Matthew Haslett CEng MIMechE FWeldI IWE
Team Leader - Environmental Testing
Matthew is Team Leader - Environmental Testing in the Fatigue and Fracture Integrity Management Section, with experience in mechanical and structural engineering. His main areas of expertise lie in fracture toughness testing, mechanical testing, Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA), full-scale testing and bespoke mechanical testing.
Matthew also organises TWI’s training course on Structural Integrity Assessment to BS 7910 and lectures on the Design and Construction module of the EWF/IIW Welding Diploma.
Rob Kulka EngD CEng MIMechE
Section Manager - Asset Integrity Management
Rob Kulka is a chartered mechanical engineer and undertook an engineering doctorate at the University of Manchester, developing the understanding of fracture mechanics behaviours in complex configurations. He spent ten years as a structural integrity expert with Frazer-Nash Consultancy and is now Section Manager for Asset Integrity Management at TWI.
Rob has significant experience in analysis of material performance and the demonstration of structural integrity of components in the nuclear, power, defence, petrochemical, and transport industries, through the use of complex computational analysis, defect tolerance and design code assessments.
Yin Jin Janin
Principal Project Leader – Fatigue Integrity Management
Yin Jin joined TWI in July 2012 as a project leader in Fracture Integrity Management Section. She manages projects that involve testing as well as the applications of ECAs of engineering structures especially those containing non-standard flaw geometry. She is a member of BS 7910n WEE37 main committee and Fracture Panel. She is also Codes and Standards Theme Lead of FESI. As a member of BS and ISO fracture toughness testing committee, she works closely with Henryk Pisarski to lead the development of testing procedures.
Yin Jin's history with TWI dated back to 2008 when she joined the Numerical Modelling and Optimisation Section as a Research Engineer through the Nuclear Engineering Doctorate Programme of University of Manchester. Her EngD work, under the supervision of Prof Stuart Lyon and Prof John Wintle, covered areas of corrosion and materials science, residual stress measurement as well as computational simulation of welds.
Prior to 2008, Yin Jin was a Principal Process Engineer at a foundry in Manchester, leading and developing techniques to improve casting process and product quality. Yin Jin is a Malaysian born Chinese and came from Borneo, Malaysia.
