TWI hosted the 39th meeting of the Aerospace Industry Panel on Wednesday 13th March. Thirty Industrial Members from eight countries attended the meeting, and heard presentations from GKN Aerospace on EB welding, Fronius on novel spot welding and the European Space Agency on new coatings for space. TWI also made presentations on its hydrogen test facility, friction stir welding of steel, NDT of composites projects, welding software and the new Structural Integrity Research Foundation (SIRF) initiative. The 40th Aerospace Industry Panel meeting will take place at TWI on Wednesday 18th September 2013, and more details on the Aerospace Panel can be obtained from Richard Freeman.
TWI hosted the 2nd International Linear Friction Welding (LFW) seminar at TWI on 14th March, with over 50 attendees from 11 countries. 3 LFW equipment manufacturers presented on machine developments (ACB, MTI and Thompson Friction Welding), followed by 4 presentations by industrial end users on their current and future plans for this technology (Boeing, Rolls-Royce, GKN Aerospace and Constellium). This was followed by 3 presentations from TWI on LFW R&D programmes, Cranfield University on R&D work with TWI and Boeing, and TWI Wales on NDT methods for inspection of linear friction welds. A tour of the friction welding laboratory was then given, with several linear friction welds made for the attendees on the Thompson E20 machine. More details on TWI's linear friction welding activities can be obtained from Mike Russell or Bert Flipo.
