Invitation to Group Sponsored Project Launch event

TWI Group Sponsored Proposal PR22073

Development of Recommended Practices for Engineering Critical Assessments of Pipe-in-Pipes

The exploration and production of deep and ultra-deep oil fields have required innovations in production technologies to cope with challenging environments. Pipe-in-pipe (PIP) solutions have been adopted to efficiently transport hydrocarbons in these fields over large distances where wax and hydrate problems must be managed. PIPs accommodate large hydrostatic pressures, installation by J-lay and S-lay, long cool-down times and provide superior thermal performance over existing insulated solutions. Due to the geometric complexity of these structures, Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) of flaws in PIP welds can be time-consuming and expensive due to the need for extensive Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Current guidance is also not sufficiently comprehensive for characterising weld metal fracture toughness and Fatigue Crack Growth Rates (FCGR). Therefore, the objective of this project is to fill a technological gap by developing and validating a fracture integrity assessment procedure for PIPs. This will involve the generation of geometry-specific stress intensity factor solutions, limit load solutions that incorporate biaxial loading, and fracture toughness and FCGR testing of swaged weld metal.

The project outline proposal (PR22073) gives information on the proposed project, and is attached.

A project launch meeting will be held as follows to discuss and refine the content of the project:

Date: Tuesday 10 September 2013

Venue: Room G5, Bevan Braithwaite Building, TWI Ltd Granta Park, Great Abington, Cambridge, CB21 6AL, and via WebEx in Houston
