Make it with Lasers

The next Make it with Lasers seminar will be held at the Innovation Technology Centre (ITC), Wallis Way Catcliffe, Rotherham on Wednesday 18 April 2007. The event will cover all aspects of laser processing including cutting, welding and marking and will include technical presentations, case studies, exhibition and laser demonstrations.

Upgrade to 1000 bar testing facilities

TWI is already the European leader in testing tensile specimens in hydrogen pressures of up to 450 bar and temperatures from ambient to +85°C. It is now planned to commission an additional vessel and testing machine in the same laboratory to enable testing up to 1000 bar of hydrogen and temperatures of -150 to +85°C. The new facility will be able to carry out tensile, fatigue and, in due course, fracture toughness tests. The advantages of this new capability will be of interest to Industrial Member companies in many sectors, particularly power and automotive.

National Science Week

In March 2007 the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB), working with The BA (British Association for the Advancement of Science) is expanding the UK's National Science Week to become National Science and Engineering Week. It is supported by £280,000 of funding from the Department of Trade and Industry.

The new partnership is set to broaden the scale and scope of the programme and to celebrate the vital contribution that engineering makes to society.

There will be a significant increase in engineering related activities, the addition of some 500 engineering focused events, and energy and climate change will again be a key focus during the week, building on the success of the Click for Climate campaign during last year's National Science Week.
