First EuroStir workshop a popular hit

Connect, no. 120, September/October 2002, p.3

The first EuroStir workshop, held at TWI in July 2002, was a great success with nearly 100 delegates, mainly from the UK.

The day began with presentations on process fundamentals and industrial applications of friction stir welding (FSW). An introduction to the structure of the EuroStir project was given by Stephen Webster of Corus and typical machine tool components and configurations were explained by Jonathan Martin of Smart Group. An afternoon of 'show and tell' in TWI's laboratories included the first public demonstrations of straight butt welds in copper sheets and non-linear FSW using a tool normal to the workpiece.

Proceedings cost £22.50 and are available from Carol Fielding. E-mail: carol.fielding@twi.co.uk, or Stephan Kallee who can also inform you about plans for future EuroStir workshops. E-mail: stephan.kallee@twi.co.uk

At the EuroStir Workshop a welding speed of 0.5m/min was demonstrated for FSW of a 6mm thick 5083 aluminium alloy, using parameters optimised for tools normal to the workpiece surface.
