The National Finals of the UK SkillWELD competition were held at TWI, Granta Park, Cambridge on Thursday, 4 April 2002. The prizes were presented by Lord Trefgarne, Chairman of SkillENG.
Winners of the regional heats held in February - 13 in all - were at TWI from 2 to 4 April 2002 where they spent two days being examined on their welding skills. They were required to produce a number of different welds to a very high standard using different processes and materials.
The standard of welding in the competition was very high and the judges had a difficult task. However, the eventual winner was Lee Harvey, a student from Dudley College who now works for Mitsui Babcock. Second place went to Jay Goodfellow of Lowestoft College, third was Amy Durant of Dudley College and in fourth place was Andrew Wright of Air Products.
All the finalists will now go on to participate in the Skills City in Salford in November and one of the first four may be selected to take part in the World Skills Competition in Switzerland in 2003.
