TWI's engineers and technicians have recently completed the installation and initial testing of their new ESAB SuperStir TM machine. This friction stir welding machine has performed very well during early trials, and a more detailed commissioning programme is now underway.

Seven machine operators have been trained to use the CNC system, which can process non-linear welds in up to 18mm thickness aluminium alloys and can also be used for straight welds in other materials and thicker aluminium plates.

The assembly and operator training were completed on target, and the machine is already being used for experiments in the EuroStir project and international Single Sponsored Projects.
