Electron beam welding of crack-sensitive alloys.

Special technology has been developed at TWI to enable welding of crack sensitive alloys. Using a combination of rapid beam deflection and beam defocus, the normally high intensity electron beam can be 'split' into a combination heat source, with an intense section for welding, and a diffuse section heating the material adjacent to the weld. This approach can completely alter the temperature/stress distribution around the weld as it cools, thus avoiding the initiation of certain types of cracking altogether. The work carried out so far also indicates that certain types of distortion can be reduced by this welding technique.
