December 1999 marked the retirement of Dave Ellis, one of the welding industry's most experienced and respected figures.

He began his career in 1962 with Ashmore Benson Pase, moving to International Combustion, Derby in 1968. His long association with BOC/Murex/ESAB began in 1973 only finishing in 1991 when he left ESAB to become an independent consultant.

Dave has always been a vital link between TWI branch, research, professional and standards activities while providing invaluable industry feedback to TWI. His association with The Welding Institute spans over 30 years. He has played an active role in Branch activities in East Midlands and Sheffield and nationally as a member of TWI Professional Board, Education Committee, Research Board, Membership Board and other committees. In 1993 he received The Welding Institute's Distinguished Service Award.

His retirement was marked by a dinner at TWI attended by friends and colleagues who had served with him on branch and national committees over the years. Dave was presented with a gift of crystal glassware.

Dave and his wife Anita recently moved to Whitby in their native county of Yorkshire to enjoy a well-earned retirement in the bracing air of the North East coast.
