Training role expands in the Far East

Connect, no. 102, September/October 1999, p.8

The training and examination services offered by TWI have had a high profile in the Far East for a number of years particularly in Malaysia and Singapore. However, 1999 has also seen training staff from TWI travelling to Thailand to run courses there.

This business growth is due to a recent collaboration with a local company, Mermaid Maritime Ltd, which has operational bases in Laem Chabang on the eastern seaboard and Songkla near the Malaysian border as well as headquarters in Bangkok.

The first training programme provided was a practical welder training course for 12 marine maintenance personnel from a major Thai shipping group. Subsequently, in April the Mermaid Maritime underwater training facility in Laem Chabang played host to the first wet welding course of its kind in Thailand with a 100% pass rate. Other courses offered are Lloyd's underwater inspection, diving supervisor training and ACFM inspection. It is anticipated that CSWIP diving courses will be offered in the near future. Such training is of inestimable value to the flourishing petrochemical and offshore industries in Thailand.

From September 1999 an expanding programme of training and examinations will also offer welding inspection, NDT and painting inspection courses. The intention is to cover the whole range of training in welding technology and inspection. Training is at present delivered by staff from the UK and TWI's Malaysian operation but it is planned that several courses will eventually be run by trainers from within Thailand.
