Upskilling a Young Engineer!

Mon, 12 October, 2020

The oil and gas industry, whether onshore or offshore, provides ample career opportunities and challenges. Many young technical personnel, especially those who wish for a steady career advancement in the inspection field, understand the importance of certification and make use of every opportunity to gain appropriate certification in their field.

TWI and Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF) offer one such opportunity for in-country citizens with the skill development programme, which provides partial bursaries/subsidies to Indian nationals who wish to further their careers.

Manish M is a young engineer, pursuing his M.Tech in Material Science and Technology from VTU (Karnataka). In 2018, he started his career in the field of NDT after graduating with a BE in Mechanical Engineering. After graduating, he joined as a quality engineer in a training and service company.

His job involved film interpretation of weld joints for different applications in various sectors including construction, automotive, railways and general fabrication. Manish’s enthusiasm to learn new things, as well as his strong interpersonal skills, took him to the next level as a quality inspector for railway components.

Manish holds an ASNT level 2 in five NDT techniques, yet he felt his knowledge was limited and chose to join an ISO 9712 certification programme. He says that, “CSWIP (ISO 9712) gives more theoretical knowledge and a practical-oriented approach, which is a must in current industry.”

Fascinated with an inspection career, Manish wanted to grow professionally and gain more knowledge and confidence. Having around a year of experience in radiographic film interpretation, he chose to do a globally recognized RTFI certification. When he found out about the South East Asia Skill Enhancement Programme (SEASEP), he was very happy to make use of this opportunity to upskill his career to the next level.

This programme offered the following advantages:

  • Courses via virtual zoom classroom with just the practical and examination in a real –life classroom kept the present pandemic situation in mind
  • Productive use of the lockdown period
  • Certification as per ISO 9712
  • Courses economically priced with a mind to serve the industry at large

Manish completed the CSWIP Radiographic Interpretation of Weld Online Live course between 9th and 13th September 2020 via Zoom. According to him the training was very effective and was beyond his expectations. He felt the tutor was very experienced in delivering the concepts and clarified all doubts raised during the session. The theoretical concepts were delivered for 5 days (4 hours per day) and Manish will attend his in-class practical session and examination in the coming weeks.

As a next step, he has plans to get certified for other conventional and advanced NDT methods and gain a wealth of new knowledge.

TWI India wishes him all the best for his future endeavours and assures him of their support for his professional growth.
