Thomas Kappani Vareed, a graduate in mechanical engineering, is a certified CSWIP Senior Welding Inspector and a lead auditor.
With over 25 years’ experience in petrochemical and oil and gas industry, Thomas started his career as a QA/QC assistant engineer. His experience and hard work has taken him to the next level as a Senior QA/QC Inspector in an offshore company.
Thomas has been working in offshore inspection for the past 10 years, where his job involves the coordination of QA/QC inspectors and construction personnel. He is also responsible for guiding and advising inspectors on quality related issues.
According to Thomas, while the levels of tension in his job are comparatively low, a high level of skill and knowledge is required to coordinate with personnel and clients. He believes that international certification is key to career advancement and upskilling, as he asserted, “Highly qualified inspectors are assets to its organisation.”
Of course, certification allows you to show that you have the specific skills or knowledge to carry out a role, and in Thomas’ field of work, the employer outsources inspection personnel to their clients, making it important to get certified and enhance your job performance.
Thomas had completed BGAS-CSWIP Painting Inspector- Grade 2 in 2012, since when he has been working in offshore inspection. However, he wanted to take his career to the next level and maintain his professional credentials. Thomas knew BGAS-CSWIP Painting Inspector - Grade 1 is an advanced course, which is specialised for offshore painting inspection, so he attended the online live course conducted by TWI India in June 2020.
During the current pandemic, attending an online live course has been a very helpful and comfortable way for Thomas to continue to improve his skills. He explained that he did not feel any difference when compared to regular classroom training, and felt the training and lecturer was excellent. Thomas noted that way the lecturer had delivered the key concepts was clear and simple to understand. Overall, the zoom course experience was beyond his expectations.
As his next step in career progression, Thomas is planning to attend coating inspector and cathodic protection courses. He believes that these additional certifications will support him in his career path in the oil and gas industry, and TWI India would like to wish him success in all his future endeavours.
