There is little doubt that, for the majority of pipelines being constructed, Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) has the potential of providing a higher quality, higher productivity pipeline girth weld inspection. The fundamental variable in the quality of an AUT inspection is the technical competence of the operator. AUT can provide much more information to the operator with a greater potential for variation.
Most of the advancements in AUT come from the last ten years and continue to be directed at improving the overall robustness of the technique and simplifying the AUT inspection process for the operator. AUT is more reliable, faster and offers better detection of critical fusion defects in pipeline construction welds than many of the competing technologies.
TWI India conducted a free webinar on AUT as applied to pipeline girth welds on 29 August 2020 via Zoom. Mr Sathish Murugan A (Manager, NDT) hosted the session, which lasted four hours.
A total of 219 delegates registered prior to the webinar, of which 47 participated live on the day. The session covered a very brief history, introduction and basic theory of AUT, inspection process, strip chart images, acceptance criteria and more.
The session was very interactive as participants posted many technical queries, which Sathish addressed in detail.
A lack of qualified inspection technicians to meet industry demand is driving a need to simplify the operation of NDT systems and improve inspection productivity. As a result, the importance of AUT certification in industry was emphasized and participants were excited to have more details on training certification for AUT welds.
