Power - Fossil - Hydropower: Carbon Abatement Technologies

The combustion of fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide (CO2) which is widely acknowledged to be the main cause of climate change. However, despite increases in the uptake of renewable energy, fossil fuels will continue to play a major role in the generation of electricity across the globe for the foreseeable future.

For this continued use of fossil fuels to be in any way tenable a suite of advanced carbon abatement technologies (CATs) is required. TWI's expertise can play a significant role in the development and support of these technologies.

CATs include technologies such as:

  • Higher-efficiency conversion processes to reduce fuel consumption and the associated emission of CO2
  • The use of lower-carbon fuels such as co-firing of biomass
  • Carbon capture and storage (CCS) – where CO2 is captured and placed in long-term storage in geological formations.

Although the overall processes associated with CATs are widely understood, there are still numerous challenges across all of these technologies in terms of materials, fabrication and integrity.

TWI's expertise spans the performance of materials in high-temperature aggressive environments, through fabrication and repair with advanced materials to the inspection and integrity assessment of overland and subsea pipelines.

TWI delivers a substantial cost benefit to its Members, by providing single-point access to technical and project management support across the CATs sector.

TWI has a wide-ranging technology base, which mirrors the diversity of challenges faced by the CATs sector. We are, therefore, well placed to transfer technology such as oil and gas subsea pipeline expertise, for example, to CATs.
