The largest use of titanium alloys is in aerospace but it is also found in chemical plant and its biocompatibility leads to medical applications. Its high technology reputation leads to a variety of applications in sporting goods.

Titanium alloys are used in situations where high quality welds are essential. This leads to high demands on cleanliness and process control.

TWI is able to provide information about the alloys without a vested interest in their promotion.

TWI has worked on techniques to produce high quality welds by arc, power beam and friction processes.

TWI has worked on the application of wide range of joining processes to titanium alloys. This has included arc process variants, solid state welding (particularly friction processes) and power beam techniques. In addition, it has carried out assessments of sustained load phenomena, environmental performance, fatigue and fracture behaviour.
