Plasma Arc Welding

Joining Technologies Banner
Innerpage Title Banner
Plasma welding is very similar in principle to TIG welding. The arc is formed between a pointed tungsten electrode and an anode – in the case of plasma welding, this is a water-cooled copper bowl that surrounds the tungsten. By positioning the electrode within the body of the torch, the plasma arc can be separated from the shielding gas envelope and the plasma is forced through a fine bore hole in the copper anode.

The principal benefits of plasma welding are as follows:

  • Non-critical torch-to-workpiece distance: very useful at lower current.
  • Ability to weld relatively thick material in keyhole mode.
  • Faster deposition rates than TIG.
