Joining is necessary for components where design or economic constraints restrict the use of ceramics. Instead the ceramic is placed in the most arduous service conditions and less exotic materials are used elsewhere.

The are many possible techniques for joining ceramics materials, Fig.1, which range from mechanical bolting and screw threads to direct bonding methods such as brazing and diffusion bonding.

Another way of characterising these methods would be in terms of temperature capability. The figure below shows how the temperature capability of various joining techniques varies and compares this to the capabilities of the three basic materials types.
