What is 'Kanban'?

In practise, a special card or shelf (often numbered or colour coded) is used for each different part. Only a limited number of cards or shelves exist in production. Once a given quantity of parts has been used in assembly, the card or empty shelf is used to initiate the further production of that part. In this way, it is easy to get an overview of production, and inventories can be kept at specified low levels.
