Can friction welding be used to join nickel and cobalt superalloys?

Frequently asked questions

  • In many instances it is the only joining method available for producing good weld properties.
  • More consistent weld quality.
  • Lower cost owing to shorter weld time when compared with other processes.

Good quality joints are obtained in like to like and dissimilar metal combinations basically because there is no macro-melting at the weld interface. This means that none of the potential problems associated with fusion welding these materials, such as microcracking, porosity, etc. exist.
