TWI's expert-led Welding of Plastic Components Course

Tue, 15 May, 2018

Launched in 2014 as a result of work for the automotive industry, TWI’s Welding of Plastic Components Training Course has been updated for 2018 to take into account the new official British Standard which covers the joining of thermoplastic materials.

Limited spaces are now available for June’s three-day course, which starts on 5 June, and takes place at TWI’s Cambridge facilities

Course outline

The course provides guidance and best practice on welding techniques for joining moulded plastic components using hot plate, vibration, ultrasonic, spin, infrared and laser welding, covering the welding equipment and process parameters for each method. Instructors will also give direction on joint design and best methods for assessing joint quality.

Who is the course aimed at

Aimed at engineers involved in material selection, design and fabrication of moulded plastic components the training course is a result of work undertaken by TWI for the automotive industry to review welding procedures and design guidelines for moulded plastic components to guard against failure in service.

The course may also benefit engineers working in high tech industries such as automotive, medical and domestic appliance are required to design complex systems involving parts that may need to be welded or bonded.

Course objectives

By the end of the course attendees will be equipped with the necessary welding knowledge for designing plastic moulded parts for complex, high integrity applications, have the information required to optimise a welding process and trouble-shoot a production problem, and have explored the range of processes available for joining moulded parts.

The course is recognised by The Welding Institute for CPD.

New British Standard

TWI was involved in the development of an official British Standard covering the joining of thermoplastic materials, which was formally published at the beginning of this year. The new standard (BS89100) is not confined solely to the automotive industry but has been developed in close cooperation with several automotive companies including JLR, Ford and off-road specialist JCB.

BS 89100 – Joining of thermoplastic moulded components – Specification of variables for thermal joining processes - has been developed to provide companies and organisations with a set of industry approved procedures for the implementation and control of thermal joining processes, by specifying the minimum parameters required to produce components to a consistent level of quality.

Welding processes and services

TWI offers a number of services relating to the welding of polymers, including testing, training, equipment and expert advice.
