New sour corrosion course proves a success

Mon, 22 January, 2018

TWI’s new expert-led sour corrosion course, which focused on performance and testing of materials in sour service, has received excellent feedback from the first cohort of delegates.

The two-day course, which took place on 21-22 March at TWI’s state-of-the-art facilities at its Cambridge headquarters in the UK, was designed around TWI’s world-leading expertise in the field of sour service corrosion, and industry-led demand.

The term ‘sour’ refers to the presence of hydrogen sulphide. Handling of sour fluids is a significant challenge for the oil and gas industries, up- and down-stream. TWI has been directly involved in this specialist area since the early 1970’s.

Aimed to attract materials and welding engineers who required a better understanding of issues relating to performance and testing of materials in sour service, the course provided an excellent introduction for engineers looking to develop their knowledge in this discipline. Delegates came from the UK, as well as The Netherlands and Switzerland, representing companies such as TechnipFMC and Sulzer.

The course provided an introduction to sour service including definitions, terminology, units and significance of H2S in corrosion, sour degradation mechanisms, environmental cracking, stress corrosion cracking, test methods and key standards.

Delegates benefited from the experience of the course presenters Richard Pargeter and Dr Briony Holmes who between them have more than 50 years’ experience related to sour service, as well as TWI experts Menno Hoekstra and David Smyth-Boyle.

Delegate feedback included the following comments:

‘Structured overview of sour service testing. Various experts involved. Good interaction. Lots of details and clear explanation, highlighting all aspects.’

‘Very well organised and professionally instructed in a clear and concise [manner]. Team of experts which are set-up to give lectures are very helpful.’

Experts from TWI will be at NACE’s Corrosion 2018 Conference and Expo, which started on the 15 April in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. During the conference TWI staff will be presenting a selection of papers, as well as being available to discuss any corrosion-related issues on stand 1918.
