Technical Support for Specialist Off Highway and Mining Plant

TWI uses its core knowledge and experience of the technical problems faced by vehicles and plant in rugged environments to help Member companies in the specialist off-highway and mining sector improve the performance, reliability and cost-effectiveness of their assets.

We understand the particular challenges faced by this industry sector, whether that is in construction or agriculture, and have worked with our Industrial Member companies to find solutions.

These challenges can range from the design and manufacturing phases for assets, such as welding and manufacturing optimisation and in-service difficulties like paint adhesion and oxidisation, corrosion, distortion and chrome replacement. TWI also recognises the need to develop and improve, so has offered support in areas including lightweighting, electrification, and the introduction of new products.

TWI is also on hand when things go wrong and can investigate product failures to uncover the causes and develop solutions. As an independent company, we provide authoritative and impartial expert advice, knowhow and safety assurance through engineering, materials and joining technologies.

Services

At a broad glance, our research and development and testing facilities deliver advice and guidance on:

These overarching areas of expertise include a wide range of sub-topics including, for example:

Additive manufacturing; laser processing; numerical modelling and optimisation; arc welding; electron beam; friction and forge processes; resistance welding; mechanical fastening; clinching; bolting; furnace technologies; joining systems integration; materials performance; ferrous alloys; stainless steels; non-ferrous alloys; welding engineering; corrosion testing; surfacing; thermal spraying; fatigue, fracture and asset integrity management; ultrasonics; NDT validation; functional coatings and resins; adhesives; composites; sealants; polymers; elastomers, and more.

Innovative Solutions

TWI has also created some bespoke software services and technologies that can be used for off-highway applications. These technologies include CoreFlowTM, which allows for the implementation of thermal management and fluid transfer, and SurFlowTM, which allows for data transmission across the surface of a part, allowing for further weight reduction and other benefits. In addition to this, we have been working closely on electrification solutions such as battery pack and cell production and design. These technologies show how TWI’s ongoing research and innovation can be used across industry to offer benefits and solutions to challenges both now and in the future.

Support

In addition to our services, TWI provides a range of additional support to our Industrial Members.

Whether you are operating in yellow or green industries, TWI can deliver enquiry support vial email or telephone, offering advice, information or even just a second opinion. This is delivered through direct contact with our specialist engineers. Alternatively, we can arrange meetings to discuss specific issues or provide a more in-depth technical discussion, and these can include multiple engineers and experts with different specialisations. We also engage in annual liaison meetings and can organise video conference calls too.

Our library service provides unlimited user access to information resources via the TWI website, with over 6,500 content items, more than 1,000 frequently asked questions, knowledge summaries, best practice guides, and online catalogue and more.

In addition to all of this, TWI provides welding procedure accreditation, consultancy and legal support (when required), as well as global training facilities to help ensure your workforce are trained and certified. We also arrange webinars and other events to provide another route for you to connect, ask questions and gain important knowledge from our experts.
