Communities and Education Outreach

Educational Outreach

Educational outreach activities carried out by TWI Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) Ambassadors, The Welding Institute’s Younger Members’ Committee and staff volunteers build on local associations with schools and colleges, finding ways to link real industry challenges with science and engineering curriculum topics and in supporting post-16 choices at careers events attended by our apprentices and graduates.

From primary, secondary, further education, university and to postgraduate level, we have put into place structured learning activities and annual programmes. This includes fun, hands-on workshops delivered in schools or at local science fairs; work experience and technical mentoring via our partner-schools arrangements or through the Nuffield Foundation or the Arkwright Scholarships Trust; and undergraduate summer placements. The newly launched National Structural Integrity Research Centre at TWI for postgraduate education in an industrial environment will train over 500 students in a ten-year period.

TWI is represented on the steering committee of the educational enterprise Form the Future, and is regularly engaged with STEMNet and STEM Team East .

In 2016, the company hosted 28 educational industry tours to TWI headquarters and regional offices from schools, colleges and universities nationally and made a further 16 visits into schools.

In a typical year we will connect with over 9000 individuals.

Communities and Charitable Causes

TWI  is keen to support the communities neighbouring its offices. Throughout the year it contributes to a number of projects and activities, along with local and national charitable initiatives. The company encourages community networking, and many staff engage with groups such as the Byte Night board or undertake voluntary work.

Its most recent charity and community contributions include a Diving for the Disabled event at TWI’s Kuala Lumpur base in South East Asia, engagement in the Bateman’s Trust school project in Chennai, India and in the UK, support for a Cambridgeshire school to achieve its Primary Science Quality Mark.

In 2016 the organisation's professional arm The Welding Institute launched the Tipper Group as a forum for women engineers. The group has successfully led a series of lectures and events for all staff on inspirational technical topics, and participates in outreach events which, in turn, helps to encourage the progression of female talent in scientific disciplines.

TWI Staff Community

At TWI we are committed to providing learning and development opportunities, delivering bespoke courses including management and leadership, business and commercial and new courses to offer the broader spectrum of softer skills.

In addition to supporting employees in attaining further education and professional qualifications, we have more than 25 employees currently studying modern apprenticeships in multiple disciplines and will recruit more apprentices in the coming year. TWI is a member of The 5% Club, creating momentum behind the recruitment of apprentices and graduates.

Investment in a new HR system has given employees self-service access to employment details and opportunities through a contemporary recruitment portal.
